10 MOST OFFENSIVE THINGS A BOSS CAN SAY TO AN EMPLOYEE!

Well, this is running endlessly for ages now — the tug of war between leaders and followers. In a company, we call them employers and employees.

Some employers are quite offensive with their choice of words in the workplace and end up hurting and/or demoralizing fellow colleagues.

Here’s a list of the offensive things that can come across as being offensive:

1. “You’re so lucky to get a job here”.

Making employees feel like they landed this job only because of their luck is very offensive. Make them feel confident about themselves. Always encourage and help them improve.

2. You look great for your age.

It is very inappropriate and often regarded as being impolite.

3. If you don’t like this job, there are plenty of other candidates in line.

It is a straight forward morale killer. Using this statement will make the employees far more distracted and disturbed. This might even push them to look out for other options.

4. I don’t have time for this because I’m working on other important things for the company.

Do make some time for your employees. If you can’t afford to squeeze the time for that moment, tell them when they can come back and schedule an appointment.

5. I keep hearing that people around here have concerns about you. Address those concerns immediately.

You cannot confront people with an issue that you’ve never come across. Asking questions and showing some empathy will be helpful. Avoid being judgmental.

6. Something is wrong with you, work on fixing it.

All it does is to make employees feel inferior. Instead, one should take responsibility for making them better. Be specific and helpful in your assessment of people.

7. Is that all you can do?

That is very insulting. Show people how to be better at their job and set expectations wisely from the beginning.

8. I don’t have time to give you feedback. You’re doing fine.

People can’t improve without feedback. Leaders need to make time to give feedback. After all, one should recognize that there’s always room for improvement.

9. No one else but you had a problem figuring this out

Don’t compare or judge your employees. Having some patience and giving them clear instructions is necessary to get the job done.

10. It wasn’t personal. it’s just business.

Generally, we are all wired in a way to take things personally. Show respect and kindness, especially when there are unfavorable reviews or other criticisms.

So next time you feel like saying any of these things, hold on for a moment and come up with something more reasonable and incentivizing. Sometimes we do end up saying things that are hurtful, but learning from our mistakes and consciously putting an effort to improve will make a big difference.
